Tue 16 Feb 2010 When Earl Tupper was a young man he often dreamed of becoming a famous inventor and multimillionaire. The realization of those dreams began in earnest in 1946 when he introduced his first Tupperware product to the world. This was the ‘wonder bowl, ‘ a plastic container which ‘burped’ and created an airtight seal when the lid was put on. By the early 1950’s his company benefited from explosive demand for its products and in 1958 he sold his company for sixteen million dollars, divorced his wife, and bought an island in Central America. He had fulfilled his dreams.
Prior to his ultimate success, Tupper attempted to market his products in traditional retail fashion. Products were not selling well in department stores even with hefty marketing. It was not until 1948 that he partnered up with Brownie Wise and product demand grew. This business team brought about a brand new form of marketing: direct marketing.
Wise was selling huge quantities of Tupperware items at parties she was hosting at her home. When Tupper saw how successful these parties were, he gave up on retail sales entirely and sold products solely through these parties. Shortly, Thousands of women were hosting such parties for a representative. In essence, the host invited neighbors, family and friends into her home and demonstrated various products. She would then be awarded free merchandise depending on how many products were sold.
The way Tupperware parties worked was the hostess would invite to her home friends, neighbors and relatives for Tupperware product demonstrations. The host would then receive free gifts and products from the representative based on home many sales were made at the party.
Products could be found for any food type and every occasion imaginable. There were servers for chips and dips, keeping perishables cold outside, traveling with desserts and storing sugar and flour.

1. Luncheon Plates: 7″ - 8″
2. Dinner Plates: 9 inches to 10 inches

You may choose to use just one size of plate, or go with all three. You can give out luncheon plates for snacks and whatnot then move up from there. Then, if you’re serving many different types of food in buffet style, you could use the largest size for that, and save the medium size for the cake or dessert afterwards. There really is no wrong combination. It all depends on what type of food you’re serving, how you are going to serve it, and how many people are coming.
